I taped this F-18 crashing at the Blue Angels show in 1988. The plane in the video is not one of the Blue Angels, but was from MCAS El Toro, performing stunts prior to the Angels. The pilot, Col. Caddick, cuts his loop too short at the top, resulting in the aircraft impacting the tarmac. He survived, but was jacked up pretty bad. If memory serves me correctly, the paper said he broke both legs and many ribs, plus his face smashed against the control panel. He did not remember the accident. A Marine I worked with at the time told me Col. Caddick was not authorized to fly in air shows, and had pulled rank on the pilot who was scheduled to fly. There are other videos on YouTube from JSF122386 and Capactiance that show different angles. Note: this was shot with Sony's very first 8mm Handycam, the CCD-M8. No zoom. No playback. I still have it, tucked away in my office closet. Right next to my Mac+. Both make excellent paperweights.
