Okay forget my comment about her having no energy anywhere else~ she is absolutely gorgeous in every role she dances!!! Alina is so sweet~

Her skinny legs bug me but she is amazing, especially in her variation! She has a lot more energy here than I've ever seen in her.

That's just it, klylys. I hear to the left and to the right that Somova has NOT been given opportunities to train with the best and that her current coach is inadequate. Why doesn't she switch to the one who has established success record? Perhaps she is afraid to so being young and all?
klylys (July 26, 2008 at 2:08 pm)
I would (and I have and I will) pay money any day to see Somova dance, because, yes, she is one of a kind. However I think that her talents could be used better. For example I am bothered by her habit not to have her leg completely behind her in attitudes or arabesques. But my guess (!) is that this and other habits are being supported by her current coach. I hope under the new direction she may find someone who will help her use her extraordinary gifts to better advantage.

I appologies, klylys. It is just I find it frustrating to see people going out of the way to bring Somova down just because she doesn't dance the way their own idols used to dance 30-50 years ago. I used to read The Critical Dance but then local bullies drove everybody who even think well of Somova. I would hate to see same thing happen here.

I never said that I don't like Somova. I can see why people like her. And yes she is special. A bit too much in my opinion. And I don't want to "sway public opinion". I am just stating mine...
PlanetBallet (July 25, 2008 at 8:36 pm)
klylys you said "by other corps members"?! Why don't you post videos of them then for all to admire. And if you don't like a particular dancer, please do us all a favor and don't show up at the sight of a dancer whom you don't like, because see, nothing, but nothing you or the like of you can say that can sway public opinion. Somova is ballet super-star and there's nothing you can do about that :P

Guys, this might very well be true. But I'll tell you this much - no matter what role she undertake or what company she is with for that matter, I am going to buy a ticket to see Somova first and Kitri (or whatever) second. She is one rare bird.
klylys (July 25, 2008 at 6:14 pm)
I think Kitri is a role that fits her better as Aurora or Diamonds for example. I'm still not convinced she should be dancing principal roles when she is (in my opinion) outdanced by other corps members (here Kitri's friends, who are they by the way?). I think her "special" style may be caused by her coach Chenchikova (she still is?) who is certainly not among my favorite Mariinsky dancers by far.Oh and I'm glad to see that Alina is slightly less milking the bows than I've seen her do before.

Yes that seems to be the case. And while you can see she is working hard onstage, I do not sense the fire and pazzaz of a young spanish woman inlove. I see impeccably schooled vaganova technique displayed by wonderfully long limbs and a glistening smile. She is still a fascination... |
