This is the one of the few surviving snippet of the insanely rare acetates that were cut in Clarkdale, Mississippi a hot night in spring 1948.It was recorded by a local record dealer and blues enthusiast, Oak Island Al.It features Poor Boy Snodd on his homemade electrical rigg amplifying his National Steel Guitar, slashing and sliding (allegedly he used alligator teeth as a slide!) away at his selfpenned song "Square Eye Blues" with the disturbing vocals of Cripple Back B.B as a demented side-order. These acetates feature some of the roughest blues ever recorded.Sadly the acetate were cheap, and to make matters worse they were all stored out in the open and that is why they are in such poor condition.Poor Boy Snood and Cripple Back B.B are one of all the early heroes of the blues, that to the large masses are totally unknown. The played at the streetcorners all across the south and rode trains with the likes of Booker White, Son House and Willie Brown. These acetates are the only thing recorded with them.Because of their heavy drinking, they never made it to the several scheduled dates they had both with Paramount and with OKeh.I got this clip from a friend, and I immediately felt the need to share it with the rest of the world. This is too good to go unheard! It's certainly not for the faint of heart, but then again, the good stuff never is! |
