It's also significant because Grant and Rodman have always been rivals. From 1987 to 1994 (or at least the majority of that time), Grant was with Chicago and Rodman was with the Pistons. One season after Grant was traded to Orlando, Rodman joined the Bulls. They just weren't meant to be teammates. And yes, I agree with dv122. Rodman I prefer over Grant, mainly because The Worm was a true legend (character-wise).

i agree with you. i wanted to see this matchup more in the playoffs but grant got hurt in game 1 and didnt play the rest of the round. it wouldnt have matter anyways the bulls killed the magic in the playoffs. me personaly i like rodman over grant. they both have the avantages and disadvantages.

there's something about that rebound by Dennis at 1:55...Rodman battling with Grant...it strikes me as neat because you have the Bulls' new power forward battling the Bulls' former power forward.... I don't know, just something about seeing them both go after it...new vs old...kind of neat

Anyway, my point is zone defense today is a joke and Michael would eat it alive. Defenses in the 80s and 90s got away with a lot of defenses that were in essence disguised zones, and the biggest difference then were handchecking and more physical play and more willingness for players to actually contest a shot.

In every case the defender was responsible for an offensive player. In the 80s and 90s it was perfectly legal to stand just outside the paint while "your man" was standing by the 3pt line, and that's the closest thing to a "zone" that I saw in the Kobe video. Only once Kobe penetrated, the guy standing outside the paint neither contested the shot nor made sure he covered his man in case of a kick out pass. They would just stand there admiring the play. Only once did a see a true double team.

Where are you referring to about the zone? In one sequence early on I could not account for who was guarding who and it did look like a zone. Later on when MJ blows past 3 or 4 players, the rest of the Bulls offense wasn't properly down court yet, so while it was a zone, it was not an illegal defense. Were you referring to any other plays? It's funny, I watched a Kobe highlight video covering the 2007-08 season and paused it every half-court possession, and I never saw a true zone played. |
