Steffi asked again.She had guessed that Kevin went to talk to Joe, but she didn't suspect he would be listening. Joe, hearing her voice again, grasped his hands together tightly, keeping them over his mouth. His eyes mirrored his feelings; he missed her. Kevin, after glancing at Joe, said,"He's doing fine, I guess." He paused before adding, "He misses you." Steffi played with her hair and thought about what Kevin said."That's good. I'm glad he's doing good. Um, so you remember that birthday present you gave to me?""How could I forget? How are you liking that notebook?""I like it a lot, and it's been getting some use...that's actually why I called. I wrote this...thing, and I was wondering if you could listen to it?""Sure, I'd love to. Go for it."Steffi breathed in deeply, then walked out to her back porch, picking up her guitar and her notebook with her new song, taking both with her. Once she settled down on a lounge chair on her porch facing the marsh, she began to play the intro and sing,"Step one, you say—"She was interrupted by Nick on the other end; he had been hanging out on the recording bus and just walked onto the other bus, slamming the door and laughing loudly at something Garbo had just said. Steffi stopped singing at the noise, and both Kevin and Joe turned around and glared at Nick, who looked startled."What?" he asked."Dude, shut up!" Joe and Kevin yelled. Joe added,"We're on the phone here!"Nick jumped back, alarmed, as Steffi gasped. She could recognize Joe's voice anywhere."Joe?" She said in a soft, scared voice.
