On July 19, 2008, as part of the Nationwide canvassing kickoff of the Democratic Party coordinated campaign, we organized a group to work for the neighborhood in an attempt to bring to the attention of running candidates the state of neglect that our sector has been subject to, for years. The group was called "IAM4Obama, Neighbors of Allapattah in Miami".During that meeting we discussed the problems of the community and agreed to bring these issues to the attention of our candidates for office, to seek from them to pledge to add these issues as part of their campaign, whenever is feasible. Also, we created a work-group of volunteers that will be help with all the tasks related with the coordinated campaign of Democratic Party aimed toward the Primary of August and the General Elections of November.The issues selected to discuss during our next meeting were the following: 1.- Request from our candidates to come to our community to show them the level of abandonment that this community is in. 2.- Elderly and disabled -the problems associated with home assistance and the payment for services and equipment associated with their need. 3.- At Risk Youth and Children suspended from school -How to provide sound services to those children when suspended and sent home, absent their parents from home due to work responsibilities and the need of keep them current on school material covered and assignments. 4.- Job Security and alarming unemployment rate incremental in this community and the need of training program for workers. 5.- Problems with the processing of applications with Section 8 of the Housing program. 6.- Poor transportation (long waiting period and unprotected bus stop). 7.- Police targeting of honest residents and other abuses of authority. 8.- Patrolling increase during the late hours of the night in the neighborhood.The following people participated in this meeting and pledged to bring more people to participate in the next meeting: 1.- Anibal Campusano 2.- Juan Vidal 3.- Leonel Mora 4.- Ramon Lantigua 5.- Pedro Mojica 6.- Jobercio Escano 7.- Williams German 8.- Roberto Duran 9.- Ramon Torres 10.- Rosa Santo 11.- Fedont Ferrera We have a meeting scheduled for the next Saturday from 3 to 4 o'clock, to be held at "Juan Pablo Duarte Park" dubbed the "Dominican Park", located at the intersection of 17 Avenue NW 28Th Street, in Allapattah, Miami.At that meeting, as we agreed, we will elect the principals and responsibilities will be assigned accordingly.We are planning a fund-raising activity for materials and snack to be served during the meetings and/or future campaign activities, since we are going to start an agressive canvassing drive in the neighborhood.
