The Romanian Revolution of 1989 resulted in more than 1,000 deaths in and brought about the fall of Ceauşescu and the end of the Communist regime in Romania.Following Ceauşescu's downfall, the country quickly disintegrated................. ....................... Anita Roddick read about the terrible conditions in the children orphanages and and in her typical style, a few months later she barged through a mountain of red tape and sent out a supply convoy along with volunteer employees and their relatives..................... ...................They all stayed for a few weeks sleeping rough in sleeping bags on the ground.Most of the volunteers were skilled electricians, plumbers, builders or had organisational skills that were urgently required...................... ..................You can see from this Body Shop produced video how the orphanages were transformed and all the people talking in the video are Body Shop employees or their relatives..................... ...................The young girl at the start of the video is Sam Roddick, Anita Roddicks older daughter who was deeply involved in the project.Many of these children just wanted to be picked up and cuddled. I can never watch this clip without crying and find it very moving........................ ................One of the volunteers that went out there just before Christmas told me he was giving out small presents to the children, children who had never known what it was like to posess anything of their own.A small girl was given a dolly and with tears in her eyes, looked up at him and said something in Romanian, he asked the interpreter what she had said and was told that she had asked him: 'Are you Jesus?'.He had to excuse himself, went outside and broke down in tears......................... ...............I was told that the volunteers had an area that they would take temselves off to every day or so and just cry their eyes out. This was the only way they could cope with the sadness of what they were seeing on a daily basis......................... ...............The human race should forever hold its head in shame at the sufferring it has caused over the years to the innocent children in the name of greed and power!........................ ...............I will leave you to watch and enjoy the smiles on the childrens faces but I dare you to watch without shedding a tear.
