It's not as bad as the Youtube makes it sound, but yeah, that's the thing about 100% metal guitars. They sound like they're made from,...well, metal. They won't sound like wood, much like the lucite Dan Armstrong I had in the 70s. Has a sound all its own. If I messed with different pickups, pot values, and/or amp settings, I maybe could come up with some darker tones, but I haven't really spent any time monkeying with it.

that guitar sounds tinny. that's the only way i can describe it.

seems too bright to me

Hrm, well an aluminum guitar is resonant, that doesn't make it sustain. Weaker magnets, less string tension, and less neck bend makes sustain. I'd just like to see how well these pick up pinch harmonics. Another demo I saw had a pretty decent pinch harmonic tone to it... so I think i'm gonna be getting these. The freq response on these is higher than most active pups or metal designed pups. Only stronger ones I know of are quad rail kramers... and they're poorly potted and overwound.

Saladin, I think there are way better pickups than Alumitones available for todays metal. I don't think Lace had metal in mind when they designed them. They sustain like crazy but the aluminum guitar may be contributing. That 50W Marshall was on "2" so its not a very good repesentation of how the pickups would perform in a high gain, high volume setting. If I can chase everyone out of the house one of these days, I'll dime it through a closed back Marshall cabinet & see what they'll do. Thanks!

Hey, I don't wanna sound like I'm trying to correct ya or anything... but could ya throw in some natural/artificial/pinch harmonics from different nodes? I'd like to see how this thing responds, and you have the same pickup spacing I do. I can't buy these if they aren't hot enough to play heavier metal.I think your distortion oughta do it fine, I just wanna see if the reduced magnetic strength effects the sustain as much as I'm hoping it might. |
