Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) -- The National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown, hosted a news conference on Wednesday, October 15th, to announce the name of the white male calf born May 31, 2008. Felicia Sargeant, Director of the National Buffalo Museum, made the announcement. The winning name is Dakota Legend, with the winning entry submitted by, Jaci Trefz of Jamestown. Her entry form said the name was chosen in keeping with the Dakota in the lineage of Dakota Thunder, and Dakota Miracle, and Legend, comes from the North Dakota state slogan, Legendary. For submitting the winning entry, Jaci receives a one-year family membership to the National Buffalo Museum and a $100 gift certificate to the Museum's gift shop. Ms. Sargeant points out, the name was chosen, by a five-person committee from 460, with 370 unique names, with entries, from 15 states and Canada. Members of the name selection committee were: Nina Sneider, Buffalo City Tourism Foundation; Dwaine Heinrich, Jamestown Elks Lodge #995; Mayor Clarice Liechty; Tex Weatherly, North Dakota Buffalo Foundation; and JoDee Rasmusson, Executive Director of the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce. The committee had their work cut out for them but managed to choose 4 finalists. Those names were given to the board of directors at the National Buffalo Museum, which made the final decision before the news conference. Following the birth of the white calf many visitors asked what the calf would be named, so museum officials began putting together a naming contest. The naming contest officially began on August 8, 2008 and ended September 30, 2008. The herd also has an adult albino bison, White Cloud, with one white offspring, Dakota Miracle. Another offspring of White Cloud, named Dakota Thunder, carries the albino gene and is the father of the new calf. Dakota Legend is owned by the National Buffalo Museum. Dakota Legend and Dakota Miracle will be DNA tested by Texas A&M University to verify that each is albino, with samples taken from tail hairs following the fall roundup of the Museums herd. Both bison have white fur, and pink eyes, indicating they likely are albino. The National Buffalo Museum is a non-profit educational organization devoted to the cultural and natural history of bison and the prairie. The museum is open year round. Current hours are Monday Friday 9 am 5 pm, Saturday 10 am 5 pm, and Sunday 12 5 p.m.. The Museum and the herd are located in the Frontier Village at the site of the Worlds Largest Buffalo in Jamestown just north of interstate 94 at exit #258. For more information contact Felicia Sargeant at the National Buffalo Museum, 701-252-8648.
