Chiiled to perfection, of course.:)Yes, Mr. Jamal & Ed Howard played piano on this recording because of Miss Horn's failing health, following the death of her long-time bassist, Charles Ables.A moving final project, if ever there was one.

Still on the floor but reading your comments I had missed... the legendary Ahmad Jamal at the piano?? OMG!! Oozing talent then. Back to my fetal position, in fact I'm really enjoying it. Pass the chardonnay, will you? Hugs, G*

Stephan, what a wonderfully figurative comment - and oh so true! Well, I was in a good mood when I logged on, but now... am slowly crawling down towards the floor. Come and pick me up next week... G*

I meant to mention that, due to her illnes, Ms. Horn did not play the piano on these seesions. Instead, Ahmad Jamal and another gentleman were the sidemen for this project, the first time in AJ's career.:)

This is one of those gut-wrenching performances where you have to be in a REALLY GOOD mood when you listen to this, otherwise, you might wind up on your floor in the fetal position, crying for lost loves...real AND imagined!!!LOL

I've also posted a more bombastic version of this song by Kim Weston.Hers will blow you away by it's extravert power, while Shilery's version blows one away by its intimacy.

I first discovered Shirley Horn through her transformation of a famous and endlessly covered Jobim song into something unique. Later i found her versions of Edith Piaf's "If you love me" and Jacques Brel's "If you go away", which is so so hard to match Brel's original. I do believe that Shirley made the best version ever in English! Excellent selection, Stephan!! |
