O'Brien's death was a tragic turn to a life that seemed on a path to success. The 22 year-old model thought she was on the verge of making it big. Fresh from a coveted contract to model in Italy - something that doesn't happen every day for a woman from tiny Saltspring Island in B.C. - O'Brien decided to try advancing her career another step by working in Shanghai. Less than 48 hours after the killing of Diana Gabrielle O'Brien, the modelling agency that lured her to China has shut down its website, closed its doors, and vanished into the depths of Shanghai. Its phones ring without answer. Its low-rent offices are abandoned. Those with apparent connections to the agency are refusing to talk. Even the Shanghai police are unwilling to speak of the case. The slaying of Ms. O'Brien, the 22-year-old model from Saltspring Island, B.C., has exposed the dark and dangerous side of China's fast-growing modelling business. Dozens of modelling agencies have sprung up in China's biggest cities in recent years, recruiting hundreds of models from North America and Europe, but many are small fly-by-night agencies that send their models to dubious jobs at nightclubs and bars.Diana O'Brien, 22 ans, était en Chine depuis la mi-juin après avoir décroché un contrat avec une agence de mannequin. Des amis de la jeune femme ont indiqué que la police chinoise avait ouvert une enquête pour meurtre, mais qu'elle n'avait pas révélé comment Diana O'Brien était morte. Elle fût retrouvé dans une marre de sang vers 5 heures du matin, poignardée à mort. Mannequin Canadien, Diana avait dit à des amis qu'elle n'aimait pas travailler à Shanghai et qu'elle avait acheté un billet d'avion pour rentrer au pays dans deux semaines. Elle leur avait également confié qu'elle avait travaillé comme mannequin, mais qu'elle avait également dû danser partiellement nue dans un bar devant des hommes âgés. Et le 11 juillet, la police chinoise a arrêté un suspect, Chen Jun, 18 ans, arrêté dans la province de l'Anhui (est), à quelques centaines de km de Shanghai.
