CHEN:A conference focusing on China's human rights abuses and the Beijing Olympics was held by the European council in Brussels. At the conference, a spokesman for the Dalai Lama and other human rights organizations gathered to discuss these hot topics. Here's more.STORY:Representative of a French international human rights organization, Nancy Lee, says the Beijing Olympic Games is one of the reasons for the escalation of human rights abuses in China. As a large number of people, who have nothing to do with the Olympics or politics, have been forced out of their houses, arrested, or even tortured because of the Games. At the same time, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is now becoming increasingly paranoid ahead of the Games. [Daniel Kern Bandit, Belgium Green Party Leader]:"The IOC raises the issue whether sport and politics should be separated. Dated back to the Berlin Olympics, it is known that the US kept all the Jewish athletes out of that game.[Spokesman of Dalai Lama]:"Instead of Tibet becoming independent, the Dalai lama wants Tibet to become an autonomy, so that the original culture can be conserved. The talk on 4th May with the Chinese government did not lead to any significant progress."When asked to describe the current situation of Tibetans in China, he says most of them are too scared to make contact with the outside because they could be arrested for doing so. Most of their communication equipment, such as mobile phones or computers have been confiscated. The death toll has reached over 200 and a large number are wounded. NTD, Brussels, Belgium. |
