Good question. I suppose there's more I should be doing.

I'd be interested in seeing videos on that subject. That's interesting and very revealing that homosexuality is totally passed over. I'm hoping to go to the library sometime in the next few weeks to read some old newspapers. It's strange the advertisements that barely catch our interest now could be fascinating to future generations.

I have an old encyclopedia from almost the same year (1954) and have considered doing a short series of anecdotal videos dealing with contemporary issues from the 1950s worldview. The article on Israel is pretty interesting, since the state was brand-spanking new. Homosexuality is not listed in any form. Abortion is listed as a criminal offense. Nixon was merely a vice-president, and a noted member of the Committee on Un-American Activities.Good reading!

Yes, I know I have.I could see book-burning making a resurgence in some areas of Canada and the United States given the improper impetus.I think you mentioned your mother being a baby model before. I can imagine looking at those magazines would yield a whole lot of rewards.

Well, haven't we all been tempted to burn a boring book from time to time? Seriously though, the notion of respect for books seems to be on thin ice. My grandmother saved some magazines and catalogues from the 1940s in which my mother appeared as a baby model. I treasure them greatly, mainly, of course, because they have picture of my mother in them, but also because, as you pointed out in your video, of the fascinating things they say about life at time they were published.

He had a lot of respect for books.Although, I do remember him burning some books of what he called very boring theology.

That would be interesting to flip through. My family has some National Geographics at home but they only date back to the early sixties. I had a geography teacher who shared his magazines from before the turn of the century - those were very interesting. |
