Yes I agree. I think that you can do it both ways. With and without treats. But yes I agree with you completly.

treats are great for training. they get used at the beginning, and when they learn to respond to the command in a reliable way you can stop using them altogether. there is nothing in it that makes your relationship shallow. that's ridiculous! it goes without saying that treats should not be replacing lots of praise. they go hand in hand. using treats will produce results much quicker. only use little bits of foods that your dog should be eating anyway and balance the day's calories accordingly.

I agree puppy wishes. You must be able to trust your dog without any treats, because what if your outside or inside and you tell them to come or sit or lay down and they see something more important than the treat. They'll go after that instead. My dad always tells me that you have to create a relationship with your dog.

Thats good that you have a new dog. More active eh? Well one thing that you can do is always give your dog affection, exercise, and discipline. When you are doing the tricks always tell your dog when they are doing the tricks that are a good dog. Get him more active by meeting other dogs and longer walks. We take Sophie 2 or 3 times a day, and meets anywhere between 2 to 6 dogs a day.

Indeed, avoid treats if you can. I feel that treats prevent people from learning the deeper meaning of dog training. That said, one of my best friends trains with TONS of treats, and I love her dogs.

I have recently received a shepherd/fiest mix puppy and im wondering how i should train it. We got it 6 days ago and it will not respond to anything, when we let it go, it runs under our dining room table and sleeps. Any advice to get him more active? Or a way to teach shy dogs tricks?
