Despite what you can read sometimes, between the 2 wars, various documents (war council reports, etc.) shows that he was opposed to fundings for the maginot line, rather asking to use budget to build a strong airforce and armored divisions, frequently arguing about the major impact it would have in the future. As for the maginot line itself, he wasn't "opposed" to such a concept, but asked to prioritize first the north, "nude" frontier, then mountain. French gvts didn't followed this line.

"He neglected to modernize French military with the sole exeption of the Maginot-line. Which later proved useless."-leaders of our time by John Wisman

Actually, Petain didn't approved the building of Maginot line and argued that it would be ineffective against a raid from Belgium, and he wrote, 20 years before WW2, about the need of a strong and fast tank force, and extended airforce (de Gaulle wrote the same thing years later). Unfortunately, France governments didn't apply such changes. Germany did, for the result we all know. That's a shame, indeed, he turned so bad...

Tu fais tourner la société de consommation. Alors, finalement qui est le plus "Sarkoziste" de nous deux ?PS : Sarkozy, même en elfique, ça s'écrit avec un Y.
