Microphones Best Voice Over Microphones for Voice Talent
We Recommend. Remember... that selecting a voice over microphone is very personal... and all the microphone reviews are just personal opinions and observations... the type of voice you have... the microphone pre amp, the room acoustics, the analog to digital converters... sound card.. mixing board, monitor speakers, headphones... blah blah blah all factor in the final sound that you may be looking for... Before buying ANY microphone... ask to try before you buy first!!!!... These voice over microphones listed below are the ones that I recommend... remember its NOT about price... its all about how YOU want to sound! Any of these voice over microphones will work... The AKG P220 Voice Over Microphone... In our opinion out performed mics that are 4 or 5 times more expensive... sounded better than the Yeti Pro below when it comes to pure sound quality... pair this up with the $149 Soundcraft Notepad-8FX that has 8-channel Analog Mixer with 2 Microphone Preamplifiers, Phantom Power, 3 Stereo Line-level Channels, 3-band EQ with a small desktop footprint. The AKG P220 & Soundcraft Notepad-8FX will make your sound a real deal professional voice actor studio!!!... This is thee best "sounding" bang for the buck!!! Voice Over Talent Don Capone Highly Recommends the AKG P220 as a great choice for starting a professional voice over career. Pair this up with the $149 Soundcraft Notepad-8FX and its a monster:)
street
price $149
As we DON'T recommend using any USB microphone. The "all in one" simple solution no brainer...
the Blue Yeti Pro... You don't need a preamp... you
don't need an A/D converter... all ya need is this...
The Yeti Pro!!! If ya just starting your voice over
career and because of low budget... then for new voice
actors the Yeti pro is your best choice period. With
24-bit/192kHz digital recording resolution... built-in
headphone amplifier and microphone gain. And it also has the ability
to use XLR into a outboard pre-amp... The Yeti comes in 2
versions.. the Yeti and the Yeti Pro... Choose the Yeti Pro because of the ability to use XLR...
The AKG P220 with the $149 Soundcraft
Notepad-8FX mentioned above has better sound. But if you
must... the Yeti Pro may work for the budget.
If your on a strict budget then this is a perfect first mic and a classic Voice Over Microphone. Studio Projects C1 a poor man's U87 ?
well maybe?... NOT an exact replication of a U87..but comes close matching the bottom end
and warm mids that the U87 has ... amazing clarity without the obnoxious highs... low self-noise and better spl handling than most mics.
Crystal clear sheen.. This mic kicks ass!!!
If the Sennheiser MKH-416 Shotgun Microphone is not within your budget... THIS IS IT... The SYNCO MIC-D2 Shotgun Microphone comes very close to the famous 416 sound... This is perfect for voice over not only for its sonic rich sound... but for room noise rejection. The #1 best bang for the buck shotgun microphone goes to the SYNCO MIC-D2. The SYNCO MIC-D2 Shotgun Microphone is recommended by Voice Actor Don Capone... street price $250
The Warm Audio WA-47 Microphone is used by Voice Actor Don Capone in his studio... Voice Over Actor Don Capone Highly Recommends the Warm Audio WA-47, WA-67 or the WA-87 for Professional Voice Over Work.
A Voice Actors reference-quality
microphone with Three switchable bass cut filters and
three pre-attenuation pads with LEDs for quick visual
indication. Smooth and sweet... also check out the AKG C 214
for about 599.00
Neumann TLM 103 WOW! Great for narration and just
about anything else available at any price. Often
compared to it's big brother the U87 and almost three
times less money. The Neumann TLM 103 delivers. This
baby is like Milk Chocolate and one of the quietest
microphones available. The Neumann TLM103 makes any
voice over actor sound great... also don't forget to
check out the TLM's little brother the Neumann TLM 102
for less money and a great sound also.
Don Capone's #1 go to mic and Personal Favorite
The Sennheiser MKH-416 P48 microphone is a
shotgun mic used on television sets. Voice Talent
Artists use this for Movie Trailer Voice-Overs and
anything else when they need a microphone to cut-through
the mix. Known as the L.A. mic, because of it's
popularity in the Los Angeles area. Offers some of the
best Noise Rejection so if your in a home studio...and
don't have good sound proofing... this microphone will
help reject room noise... The Sennheiser
MKH-416 is the screaming bullet you may want. The
Sennheiser MKH-416 is in our personal microphone
collection. If the 416 is out of your budget... A great Alternative voice over microphone to
the Sennheiser MKH-416 is the SYNCO MIC-D2 Shotgun Microphone for
around $250 is very very close the the 416.
The Soundelux U195 is now called
the Bock Audio 195 microphone. Bock Audio 195 large-diaphragm FET
microphone is practically two mics in one, as it lets you select between "fat" and "norm" modes for bass response tailoring, as well as providing a lo-cut switch. A unique variable pad allows the 195 to operate in even the highest SPL situations. This handmade premium microphone has great extended high and low frequency response, fantastic dynamic impact, and no typical FET mic high end "fizzle".
Voice Over Talents will stand out in the sonic quality
of this bad ass microphone! Big Bang for the Buck :)
Microtech Gefell UMT 70 S / MT 71 S
FET features the legendary M7 capsule that is considered by many to be
the finest capsule ever made.. Luv the sound of this
baby!!!! Warm natural tone and great detail... Microtech Gefell UMT 70 S / MT 71 S
is a fixed cardioid patter perfect for voice overs. A smooth treble boost
around 4 dB in the range of 7 kHz and a slight roll-off at low frequencies gives the microphone
Microtech Gefell UMT 70 S / MT 71 S its fantastic presence. The Microtech Gefell UMT 70 S / MT 71 S is
a Voice Over mic that should be in every voice over
talents arsenal.
The Telefunken R-F-T AK47 microphone provides an exceptionally clean and warm tone, substantial gain,
dark sounding and extraordinary low end with extended high frequency response, while preserving the classic tube sound
of the Telefunken microphones and landing somewhere between a
Neumann U47 and Neumann M49... For Voice Over Talent
the Telefunken R-F-T AK47 is a must have in your
mic locker. A remote 9 polar pattern external power
supply and a New Old Stock Telefunken EF732 sub

Pearlman TM1
Peluso 22 47 Limited Edition Tube Microphone
With German Telefunken Steel Tube.. The Peluso 2247 LE
Lawson L47MP MKII Tube
Microphone... all we can say is.. WOW...this mic has
some growl to it....the Lawson L47MP MKII features the Lawson reproduction of the M7 capsule used in the legendary U47 and M49 microphones.
The Lawson L47MP MKII utilizes the 6N1P vacuum tube ... the same tube used in the award winning
Lawson L251. The sonic characteristics with the Lawson L47 are endless with the ability to select an infinite number of
patterns using the pattern control in the same way you

talents... this Mic has it all.... we love it!.. Also the
Lawson L47FET is another winner!.. A Kick Ass American

Manley Reference Cardioid Microphone has that rich
tonal balance and liquid character
with Deep Warmth and Clarity.
Manley Reference Cardioid Microphones proximity effect
offers pretty good immunity from pops and sibilance
problems. The
Manley Reference Cardioid will add more testosterone to
any Voice Actor.
German Microphones ... second to
none...and this one happens to be the King. The Neumann
U87 AI is the most recognized voice recording
microphone in the industry. Voice Talent on the Neumann
U87 love its warm and natural sonic characteristics.
Great for Movie Trailer Voice-Overs and narration.
Paired up with the Avalon VT-737sp the Neumann U87 will
take your voice overs to the next level.... or you can
mod your U87 with the InnerTUBE Audio U87 RetroFit kit
that will convert your U87 into a U87 tube microphone..
recommend using NOS E88CC NOS Mullard Tube
(Holland)....The Innertube U87 RetroFit adds a sonic
dimension and clarity that to us sounds even better than
the stock U87....Neumann U87 Innertube RetroFit ads a
lot more bottom and much more open on top...much, much,
"bigger" sonically than a stock 87 that will make your
voice cut through... I Also recommend looking into the Neumann M147 tube microphone:)
HORCH RM2J Tube Microphone - JAN-tube circuit
gives a solid bottom...open and smooth sound...detail,
full, like velvet... WOW!!!... this is one badass
sounding microphone:).. This
microphone will even light your cigar!!! With the

characteristics of either multi pattern shown in (blue) or
fixed cardioid in (red) and
able to turn off rear of capsule for capturing perfect cardioid
reproduction.
The HORCH RM2J has combinations of flavors that ads to its own unique sound signature...
This is a killer mic!
Wunder CM7...a Wunder-ful mic that has
that classic U47...except... it takes it to the next
level with more air and clarity then the Neumann U47. A
Berlin M7 capsule makes this bad boy purrr... this is
it!!!
Bock 507 5-ZERO-7
Voice Talents
love the Telefunken U47 M microphone for the smooth in-your-face
presence and punchy tone. A meticulous recreation of the
classic tube microphone. Telefunken U47
A must have for your Microphone collection.
The Holy Grail of Microphones... the
Neumann U47 microphone... Big Bottom End with Wonderful Low-Mids/Mids/Upper-Mids.
since they don't make the Neumann U47 anymore... you can
find used Neumann U47 on the net... get ready to pay out
the ass for one of these!!!... so... is it woth it?...
ya damn stright it is!!! BUT... be warnned... and do
your research on the condition and the specs of any used
U47 mics out there... the VF14m tubes and the power
supply and capsules are a must to take a long look at and
ask questions about... if ya don't have the dough ray me
for the original Neumann U47 ... you can always look
into a great
U47
Clone. Some of the
U47 Clones are pretty damn close to the real

Whether or not high end Voice Talent
Microphone is "worth it" to you is a question only you
can answer. Certainly it depends to a great degree on
the type of work that you do and on your budget.
Remember go to your local dealer and do as much
microphone demos as you can. Some voice may sound better
on less expensive mics. Remember Voice Talent is what it
says it is...TALENT.. So no matter how expensive a
microphone is in my opinion 60% is coming from the Voice Over Actor
the other 40% is the equipment:) Research Research
Research! and remember just because someone says it with
conviction don't make it true. It's all opinion in the
Voice Talent game.. So do what works for you.
